Chelsea sack manager José Mourinho after disastrous start to title defence

Chelsea have parted company with manager José Mourinho. The Portuguese returned to the club in 2013 and won the Premier League title last season, but having sunk to 16th place in the table, the Stamford Bridge outfit have dismissed their manager.

Mourinho’s side have lost nine league games this season, the worst defence of a Premier League title ever. The latest loss was to Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City,2-1 at the King Power Stadium. Afterwards Mourinho took the unusual step of criticising his players. “I feel my work is betrayed,” he said. “I worked four days in training for this match. I identified four movements where Leicester score a lot of their goals and in two of the four situations I identified they scored their goals. I went through it all with the players, you can ask them.”

After the defeat it had seemed a matter of when, not if, Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich would act, with the club in real danger of slipping into the relegation zone over the crowded festive period.

When asked after the Leicester defeat if he could hold on to his job, Mourinho said: “The only thing I can say is that I want to. I have no doubts and I think you know me well enough, three years this time, plus three years another time, that I am not afraid of a big challenge, and in this moment this is a real big challenge. I want to stay, I hope Mr Abramovich and the board want me to stay.”

Chelsea FC releases statement on Jose Mourinho sack

The club on it's official website released this statement;

''Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have today parted company by mutual consent. All at Chelsea thank Jose for his immense contribution since he returned as manager in the summer of 2013. His three league titles, FA Cup, Community Shield and three League Cup wins over two spells make him the most successful manager in our 110-year history. But both Jose and the board agreed results have not been good enough this season and believe it is in the best interests of both parties to go our separate ways.''
''The club wishes to make clear Jose leaves us on good terms and will always remain a much-loved, respected and significant figure at Chelsea. His legacy at Stamford Bridge and in England has long been guaranteed and he will always be warmly welcomed back to Stamford Bridge. The club’s focus is now on ensuring our talented squad reaches its potential.There will be no further comment until a new appointment is made.'' 

Samuel Eto'o becomes coach of Turkish club Antalyaspor

Former Barcelona, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Everton Striker has been appointed coach of Turkish side Antalyaspor, after the departure of head coach Yusuf Simsek. Cameroon legend Samuel Eto'o Fils who joined the club in June on a three year deal was told by the club's president to take over coaching duties with with technical director Mehmet Ugurlu until a new coach is hired.

"We sat down with [technical director] Mehmet Ugurlu and Eto'o. Both will jointly coordinate training. The board commissioned Ugurlu and Eto'o to assume coaching duties until a new coach is found," club president Gultekin Gencer told DHA.

With his new found role, Eto'o will combine his coaching duties with playing for the club. Eto’o is currently the Super Lig’s leading scorer, grabbing 13 goals in his first 15 matches with Antalyaspor. The club has given the striker three matches to prove himself, and will then re-evaluate the situation after the league’s winter break.

In 2005, Eto’o finished third in the voting for FIFA World Player of the Year, and has been named African Player of the Year a record four times. He won the Cup of Nations twice, and is the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer.

The top scorer for the Cameroon national team, Eto’o competed in four World Cups and six African Cup of Nations.

$2.1bn arms deal scandal: I only received $30,000 from Yuguda as logistics for PDP reconcilation meetings' Bode George

Former Deputy National Chairman of PDP, Bode George, who has been implicated in the current $2.1 billion arms deal scandal, has denied claims of collecting N100 million from former Minister of state for Finance Bashir Yuguda. According to him, what he collected from Yuguda was $30,000 meant for logistics of some PDP elders who were charged to reconcile warring factions in the party. He said this in a statement he released yesterday. Read the statement after the cut...

“My attention has been drawn to another mischievous and deliberately fraudulent claim that I collected N100 million from Bashir Yuguda, the former Minister of State for Finance. This is another blatant falsehood, stripped of any iota of truth. This is yet again a depraved continuation of lynch mob journalism orchestrated by an online newspaper. The salient fact is that very early this year, long before the election period, the party set up Contact and Mobilization Committee for each zone to reconcile various factions and ensure a firm unity of purpose within the zones before the election. I was elected as the Chairman for the South-West zone. The committee which was made up of 18 senior members of the party with distinguished history of honour and exemplary leadership, met at least 10 times in my office in Lagos. These people travelled all the way from every corner of the South-West, with three members representing each state. All of them are very much alive to testify to my assertions. Sometime in the middle of these deliberations, Yuguda came to me and said the party was reimbursing the 18 elders of the committee for their transportation, accommodation and feeding allowance for the work that was done. The committee later submitted the report of its deliberations to the party and then wound up. For all these efforts Yuguda gave the committee only $30,000. That was less than N6 million at that time. Yuguda can never claim that he gave the Committee N100 million. That is the figment of the imagination of rascally scribblers purporting to be journalists. Again, facts are sacred.”

DSTRKT, a London celebrity nightclub that has been described as racist and discriminatory after they refused to let a group of young black women enter the venue deeming them "too fat" and "too dark" today Wednesday, December 9, posted a new campaign featuring four black models on twitter.

 

The new campaign, advertising club night By Invitation Only, has been regarded as another attempt at reclaiming the support of black clubgoers by vlogger Lin Mei, who was also in the party turned away by the club.

Did Putin threaten to go nuclear on ISIS?

Vladimir Putin has warned that a new underwater missile system deployed by Russian submarines in the war against ISIS in Syria could be equipped with nuclear warheads.

The Russian president said that although using nuclear weapons was a possibility, he hoped that they would 'never be needed' in the fight against terrorism. 

His warning came as Russia stepped up its barrage on Syrian rebels with its first submarine-launched cruise missile strikes combined with bombing raids from the air.

Speaking on Russian state television today, Putin claimed his military had struck '300 targets of different kinds' in the past three days and helped Syrian special forces recover the black box of a Russian warplane downed by Turkey last month.

President Putin said the cruise missiles, launched from the submarine in the Caspian Sea, could be equipped with nuclear warheads but said he hoped they would 'never be needed in the fight against terrorism'.

'With regard to strikes from a submarine: we certainly need to analyse everything that is happening on the battlefield, how the weapons work. Both the [Kalibr] missiles and the Kh-101 rockets are generally showing very good results. We now see that these are new, modern and highly effective high-precision weapons that can be equipped either with conventional or special nuclear warheads.'

'Naturally, we do not need that in fighting terrorists, and I hope we will never need it. But overall, this speaks to our significant progress in terms of improving weaponry and equipment being supplied to the Russian army and navy.'

Convicted killer Michael Adebolajo sues prison service after having two teeth knocked out in jail

Remember Michael Adebolajo, the man who knocked down a soldier and stabbed him to death in broad day light just because he was wearing a military uniform in 2012? Well, he is suing the Prison Service for compensation after two teeth were knocked out in jail.

The Islamic fanatic, 32, launched the £20,000 claim following an incident with prison guards as they tried to restrain him.
He is alleged to have become agitated as five officers led him from his cell in maximum security Belmarsh prison and claims the resulting struggle led to the loss.
But the Ministry of Justice said it thoroughly investigated the 2013 incident and found staff had done nothing wrong.

Wednesday night a spokesman said:

“A police investigation into this incident took place and no charges were brought against members of staff.

“The public will be rightly outraged at the thought of this man receiving compensation from the taxpayer and we robustly defend claims made against the Prison Service.”

Adebolajo, then 29, and Michael Adebowale, 23, were jailed for life in 2014 for hacking to death Drummer Rigby as he walked to his barracks in Woolwich, South East London.

Adebolajo ran down the defenceless 25-year-old before “butchering him” with his accomplice in an attack which shocked the nation.

Both had denied murder because they were “soldiers of Allah” but were found guilty at the Old Bailey.
Adebolajo was taken from Belmarsh in South East London to Frankland, Co Durham last year amid fears he was radicalising inmates.

He had an appeal against his murder conviction thrown out by judges last December.

Father of Paris attacker said he would 'have killed' son if he knew of plot

The father of the third gunman in the attack on the Bataclan concert hall in Paris said Wednesday he would "have killed" his son had he known what he was planning.
Said Mohamed-Aggad told AFP he only found out on Wednesday, with the rest of the nation, that his 23-year-old son Foued was among the three gunmen who sprayed concert-goers with assault rifles, killing 90 people in the worst attack of the November 13 carnage.

"Of course I'm surprised," he told reporters outside his home in Bischheim, a suburb of the northeastern city Strasbourg.
Had he known his son was planning to take part in the jihadist rampage that killed 130 people in total, "I would have killed him myself beforehand," he said.
Mohamed-Aggad said he was aware his son had travelled to Syria in 2013 with a group of youths from the Strasbourg area, "but not that he had returned".

"The last time I saw him was two years ago when he left. I have no words, I only found out this morning. I have to pull myself together."

Foued Mohamed-Aggad was the last of the three Bataclan assailants to be identified, all of them French. 
The two others, Omar Ismail Mostefai, 29, and 28-year-old former Paris bus driver Samy Amimour, had also been in Syria.
Two of the gunmen blew themselves up with suicide belts packed with explosives after the Bataclan attack. The third was shot by police who stormed the venue with hundreds of people still inside.
