Red wine was allegedly thrown at the Man Utd bench on Saturday
Arsenal have confirmed that an incident took place during the 2-1 victory at the Emirates and that a man was arrested after being picked out of the crowd by stewards.
Manchester United officials and players also confirmed that some liquid was thrown at them.
Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has complained in the past that the dug-outs at the stadium are unprotected - leaving visiting teams open to abuse and missile-throwing.
It is believed that the matter was captured on camera and that Arsenal stewards went into action to find the culprit.
Although as yet un-named, he will be banned from the stadium if he is charged and fund guilty as part of the club's policy of strict non-tolerance of anti-social behaviour.
United substitute Darren Fetcher was among those who reacted furiously when the liquid hit the bench just after Kieran Gibbs own goal put United one up in the 56th minute.
Arsenal placed extra stewards around the bench for the visit of United in November 2008 following abuse at the previous season's fixture.
At the time, Ferguson said: "Last year was pretty unsavoury. In fact, I think it was nasty. It is too open for my liking.
"It should not happen when you build a modern stadium. You need tin helmets.
"It is a weakness in the planning that you don't provide safety for the visiting substitutes and staff."
Meanwhile, Jack Wilshere is set to miss Arsenal's Champions League game at home against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday after limping out of the United match with an ankle injury.
Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is set to be fit after being substituted following a collision with team-mate Gibbs - which led to Gibbs scoring an own goal to put United ahead.
Wilshere will escape any potential action over an incident in which he appeared to aim his head towards United's Marouane Fellaini.
