Manchester United legend and current assistant manager, Ryan Giggs, has revealed in a new DVD recollecting his career that Leeds United were his least favourite opponents.
Giggs, 40, retired from playing professional football at the end of last season after over 20 years in Man United’s first-team. He took the step into coaching last season under David Moyes but was called upon to take temporary charge of the first-team for the final four games of the season due to the Scot’s sacking.
The former winger who later played central midfield under Sir Alex Ferguson says that Leeds United – now in the Championship – were his least favourite opponents because of the poisonous atmosphere in the stands and not because of what went on on the pitch.
“It [the atmosphere in the stands] would always seem to be on the boil,” he explains.
“Going to Elland Road was a challenge and when you won it was that much sweeter.”
Man United and Leeds, for a few years, were Premier League title rivals and the Red Devils often came out on top in fiery encounters. The two clubs and two sets of fans have never liked each other and it often boiled over in big games in the early-2000s
