Exclusive - England Under-21 boss outlines vision of 'DNA Report'

The Football Association have revealed an ‘England DNA report’ in a bid to improve the English national team.
The programme, launched at St George’s Park on Thursday, has been inspired by models in Belgium and Germany, according to the FA.
England Under-21 manager Gareth Southgate claimed the proposals will undergo a “gradual process”, but said he expects some impact from the outset.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the former Middlesbrough boss said: “There are short, medium and long term goals and some of the ideas we are already seeing develop with the National junior teams [are working] in terms of the style of play.
“We want to roll a few of those ideas out to the wider game, to the grass roots game so that we start to affect people’s thinking at the very youngest age groups.
“It’s a gradual process that will take a lot of time. What we can’t sit here and say is that this is for the next five, ten years – there has to be development now as well as longer term plans that obviously for younger players will take more time.”
The report will be unveiled to more than 1,500 coaches at St George’s Park, England’s national football centre, and Southgate praised the engagement between clubs and the FA.
“There a lot of good work going on in clubs but one of the beauties with St George’s is whenever we are here with the National team there is often a coaching course going on, so the engagement with clubs and the FA is much tighter than ever.
“Although we don’t sit here and tell people what to do, as what may have been the case in the past, what we do is consult with the clubs and, I think, coaches from the clubs take a lot back with them.”
