Kevin Strootman is understood to be determined to play under Louis van Gaal at Manchester United reports The Telegraph.
Having played under him for Holland, Strootman developed a close relationship under Van Gaal both on and off the pitch and the feeling of admiration was mutual, so much so that Van Gaal employed a radical 3-5-2 formation after finding out Strootman was going to miss the World Cup.
Strootman has recently returned to action following an eight month lay off due to a serious knee injury and Van Gaal will no doubt be keeping an eye on the Dutch midfielder to see how he recovers.
The major concern from United's point of view will be whether Strootman can fully recover from his knee injury as some players are simply not able to overcome ongoing problems that follow a major injury.
From Roma's perspective, they are very publicly denying Strootman will be sold at all but you get the impression that if Strootman did want to be re-united with Van Gaal, there is little they could do apart from dictate a price for a want-away player in much the same fashion as Jose Mourinho did with Juan Mata last January.
