The 20-year-old has not been named in Pearson’s 18-man matchday squad for the past three games and made only two appearances as a substitute since signing on loan in September.
United have the option to recall Powell next month and Pearson is set to cut his losses on the England Under-21 international by agreeing to terminate the season-long deal prematurely.
Powell has 18 months left on his contract at Old Trafford and United are likely to consider loaning him out again to another club for the remainder of the season.
Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Crewe Alexandra in 2012, he was even described by the former United manager as an “absolute certainty” to become a future senior England international.
But Powell is facing the prospect of another setback in his career after struggling to grasp his chance at the King Power Stadium.
